Characteristics

Pottery
To make Buncheongware, dirt is shaped into a form, white clay is coated on the surface, patterns are engraved or scraped, and glaze is coated. It was made from the late Goryeo Period to mid 16th century. In the late Goryeo Period, the nation was in turmoil, and the celadon potters scattered throughout the nation and made pottery in small scales. This was the start of Buncheongware. In Gimhae area, pottery making started in the Garak Period(42~532) was developed to Buncheongware of present day. Pottery making developed in this area because it is easier to obtain dirt suitable for Buncheongware. Earthenware skills in the old days have been developed into ceramic art of present day. In 1970s, a Korean Japanese, Gim Chunsil started a ceramic company in Dagok Village in Cheongcheon-ri. All the products were exported to Japan. And the potters stayed in this area and developed the technology and the Buncheongware industry grew. There are about 80 businesses in this area and the annual income reaches 3.6 billion won. Especially, many visitors come from Japan. The current pottery consists of replicas of Gaya earthenware, everyday ware, and art works. These products are mostly used as bridal articles or gifts. The Gimhae Pottery Festival started in 1996 continues and this year's festival was the 9th. A Pottery Village is under construction to make this festival better than all the other similar festivals in the nation, to promote Buncheongware, and to enhance the technology. It will also work as a tourist attraction.
