Gimhae Observatory

In Naeoe-dong, Gimhae, when you look at the mountain on the east, an interesting building is visible at the top of the mountain. The mountain looks like it is nesting an egg. This is Gimhae Observatory, the only public observatory in Yeongnam area. It was opened in February, 2002. As part of Millenium Memorial Projects, Gimhae Observatory was planned in December 1998. It was built to provide information on the universe and heavenly bodies, to give dreams and hopes to young people, and to provide a place of romance and memory. The shape of the observatory resembles an egg. The idea came from the myth of King Kim Suro, the founder of Garak Kingdom, born in an egg. It is said that his wife, Queen Hoe Hwangok was a princess of Ayutah Kingdom in India. As there was no high tech navigation equipment at the time, she probably consulted the stars during her voyage. In addition, a prince of Garak Kingdom built an observatory on Sangbong in Jinrye Mud Fortress to study the stars. It is still called Bibidan meaning a place of watching stars. Judging from these, it can be said that stars were important to the people of Gaya. From this perspective, the establishment of Gimhae Observatory is very meaningful not only because it is a public observatory but also it inherits the tradition of Gaya observatory. At the top of Bunseongsan Mountain, where the observatory is located, the entire area of Gimhae is visible. Especially the night view of Gimhae on a starry night is spectacular. Near the observatory, other interesting places, such as Gaya Land, and Gold Course are located and Folk Village is under construction. As it is connected to the cultural tourism complex in Gimhae, it is a wonderful place to visit for residents as well as tourists.
